Optics is a physics textbook written by established and renowned Indian author Ajoy Ghatak. It gives a comprehensive and balanced account of traditional optics as well as some of the recent developments in this field. Born in 1939, Ajoy Ghatak is an Indian physicist and an author of academic textbooks. Some of his other books include Einstein and the Special Theory Of Relativity, Basic Quantum Mechanics, and Lasers: Fundamentals And Applications to name a few. He received his M.Sc from Delhi University and PhD from Cornell University. After a short tenure as a Research Associate at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the author joined the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, in 1966. He is arguably considered the father of modern India's research and education programs in photonics and optics. Professor Ghatak has written over 170 research papers and more than 20 books. In 1995, he was elected Fellow of the Optical Society of America. He retired as an Emeritus Professor of Physics at IIT-Delhi in 2007.
